Being in a position where an extenuating circumstances letter is required can be a very anxiety provoking situation to be in. Therefore, we’ve put together some information to hopefully aid in your understanding of the process involved.
What is an Extenuating Circumstances letter?
An extenuating circumstances letter from a Psychologist would explain what happened, why it happened and what impact this then had on the individual. The letter will also provide an overview of the individuals past circumstances and current situation. The letter will also state what the individual can do to manage their psychological condition. It can support your application to re-sit your exams or assignments.
Who can write an extenuating circumstances letter?
A qualified and experienced professional can write a letter to support your extenuating circumstance. We would recommend that you ensure the professional is registered with a professional body such as HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) and others.
What does it involve?
Once you’ve established that you require a mitigating circumstances letter, it is best to get in touch with us as soon as possible. To speed up the process, we would recommend that you answer the questions below, so we have all the relevant information necessary.
- Why do you require an extenuating circumstances letter?
- Who will the letter be given to?
- When are you available for an assessment?
- When do you need the letter back by?
How long does it take to get an Extenuating Circumstances letter?
We understand that most people are required to submit a mitigating circumstances letter as soon as possible and therefore we typically provide the letters back in no less than two weeks. However, some may require it sooner than that and therefore, we’re happy to provide a fast-track service to ensure that you’re able to submit the extenuating circumstances letter to your university as soon as possible to meet the given deadlines.
What happens at the assessment?
In an assessment for an Extenuating circumstances letter, your Psychologist will firstly introduce themselves and tell you about some of the policies in place (e.g. confidentiality and its limits). The Psychologist will then want to hear from you to understand more about your current situation and what happened that has led you to applying for an extenuating circumstance. There will be a discussion about your current and past mental health difficulties and how it is currently being managed. They may be some discussion of your childhood experiences. It will also include a series of Psychometrics for you to do, to objectively measure your psychological state. Furthermore, a risk assessment will be conducted and a crisis plan (if required). Whether a crisis plan is required will depend on the outcome of the risk assessment – your Psychologist will explain further if this is needed.
TIP: Have all the dates and timelines ready before the assessment so you can give them to your Psychologist.
What will happen after the assessment?
Once the assessment is complete, the Psychologist will then complete the write of the report. It will capture the information from the clinical assessment. The Psychometrics will also be scored and included in the letter. At the end of the letter, the psychologist will include the recommendations for the university that will be beneficial to implement to promote the psychological wellbeing of the client.
