What is an Emotional Support Animal letter?
An emotional support animal (ESA) letter is a report or document that outlines the need for an individual to have an animal as it supports their physical or psychological health. It may be required when animals are not allowed in a specific location. For example, it may be presented to an airline which does not allow animals on board and therefore you can present a letter to them to confirm that you require your ESA with you to help you cope with your mental health.

Who can sign an Emotional Support Animal letter?
There are a few options of who can write an ESA letter. A medical doctor/GP can write an emotional support animal letter. A Psychologist and Psychiatrist can also write an emotional support animal letter. It is important to ensure that the professional you choose to write this letter is qualified. It is recommended to ensure that the professional is registered with the GMC (psychiatrist) or HCPC (psychologist) for the letter to be valid.
In an assessment for an ESA letter, your psychologist will firstly introduce themselves and tell you about confidentiality and its limits. They will also tell you about the other polices in place – further information can also be found in our therapy contract. The psychologist will then ask you about your emotional support animal and they you require it and how it has been helping you so far. Furthermore, there will be a discussion about your current psychological difficulties and how this is being managed. The assessment will also involve a series of Psychometrics for you to fill in, to objectively measure your psychological state alongside the clinical assessment. Finally, the psychologist will conduct a risk assessment.
Based on the findings from the clinical assessment and psychometrics, an Emotional Support Animal letter may include the following information:
- Your basic details (Name, date of birth, Address)
- Presenting difficulties
- Psychometrics
- Support Animal (why you require it, how it is helping you)
- Social support
- Psychological History (treatment, diagnosis, medication)
- Risk assessment
- Conclusion and professional recommendation
- Assessing Psychologist (brief information of the assessing Psychologist)
Please note that each letter will vary from person to person depending on the clinical interview. If there is anything you feel isn’t captured above, please let your psychologist know during the clinical assessment.
The letter typically takes two weeks to receive. If you require a letter sooner, please let us know as soon as possible and we will check if this is something we can accommodate. We have a fast-track service available, please enquire for further information. We will do our best to be as flexible as possible.
