Dr. Sharmin Aktar is a Bengali speaking Psychologist who can offer therapy in Bengali (Sylheti). She can translate the therapeutic interventions in Bangla to help her client’s mental health. She works with clients who have experienced Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after a distressing event.
She has worked with many Bengali speaking clients who have been involved in accidents that have had an impact on their mental health and their life in general. For example, they may not be able to leave their house after the road traffic accident due to the fear or worries about it happening again. They may also isolate themselves, limit social activities and thus increase their social isolation. All of which may be keeping them from moving forward in their lives.
Dr. Sharmin uses Cognitive Therapy for PTSD (CT-PTSD), which is an evidence based therapeutic intervention to support her clients to process their memories related to the trauma (e.g. car accident).
Therapy can be offered in person in London or online via video calls.
Trauma, or PTSD, is the emotional impact that come from experiencing an extremely distressing event. It’s important to note that trauma is common, with approximately 70% experiencing trauma at some point in their life. The traits in trauma can include avoidance of a certain place, re-experiencing thoughts, feelings and memories of the event itself, being alert/on edge due to anticipation of a threat, etc. All of these symptoms of trauma make it difficult to get through day-to-day activities. The first step will be an assessment to determine what you have been through, the thoughts that keep replaying in your mind, your feelings and your behaviours as a result. It will also be helpful to think about what you’re doing to cope with the distress of this trauma. The assessment will focus on the impact of the trauma on other aspects of your life (e.g. work, social, relationships, etc.). The assessment will also involve some psychometrics to gain an objective understanding of your psychological wellbeing. After the assessment a report is written of the main concerns you may have and recommendations of what would be helpful.
The interventions, translated in Bengali, will have a focus on identifying and modifying memories related to the trauma and help you to stop actions that maintain the symptoms of the trauma. Dr. Sharmin takes a kind and compassionate approach and will work at the client’s pace. The sessions can be conducted face to face or via online video call.
it is important to ensure that the therapist you choose is qualified, registered and experienced. You should always check that the therapist is registered with a governing body such as HCPC to ensure that they are following ethical and legal guidelines to protect clients. As Trauma is a sensitive topic, it is important to ensure that the therapist is experienced in working with PTSD/Trauma so that they can adequately help with client, without the risk of re-traumatising them.
One common difficulty Bengali clients face is related to the stigma of coming to counselling. This can be seen as a cultural difference held by many Bangladeshi individuals. Dr. Sharmin takes this into consideration and will address these issues early in the therapy to ease the client and ensure that they feel comfortable to share their difficulties and thus receive the right psychological support. Dr. Sharmin has conducted research into the South-Asian culture. Click here to read her profile which contains links to her published academic papers.
